Measuring Scopes

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) is an international standard for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions.

It defines three scopes of emissions for businesses, which are important to understand in addition to our “Buckets” method.

Scope 1

Scope 1 emissions related to vehicles owned by the company, and any fuel consumed onsite such as boilers or vehicles.

Example

  • Boiler for heating
  • Gas powered coffee roaster
  • LPG in a forklift truck
  • Diesel in a company car

Scope 2

Scope 2 emissions related to purchased electricity used by the company.

Example

  • Electricity for lighting and computers

Scope 3

Scope 3 is essentially everything else! This includes transportation, waste, and everything you buy and sell.

Example

  • Waste generated
  • Logistics and postage emissions
  • Water usage
  • Employee commuting emissions
